I firmly believe that chocolate is always a good idea.
And the same goes for chocolate cake. So it was only a matter of time before I shared a recipe for a Death by Chocolate Cake. But not just any death by chocolate cake, one that is e-a-s-y. Just one layer, with a simple buttercream and decorated by literally throwing chocolate all over the top. Who’s with me?
Are there any fellow chocoholics out there? If you need a cake that can come together fast but still look impressive or you simply need to satisfy REAL chocolate cravings, this is the cake for you.
I’m on a mission to bring BACK the one layer cake. I love layer cakes (really) but I know that not everyone has the time or patience to put one together. A one layer cake, on the other hand, is for EVERYONE.
This is what I like to think of as an old-fashioned cake. A simple chocolate cake made with cocoa powder, topped with a creamy chocolate buttercream that comes together in minutes. Just like mama used to make, right?
The Death By Chocolate part comes to life when you add ALL the chocolate on top. I added milk chocolate chunks and dark chocolate chips but you can add whatever you please. There is one rule of course – it HAS to be chocolate!
If you are looking for a cake to feed 2, 4 or 6 people, this Easy Death By Chocolate Cake is perfect. It’s not too outrageous that you will send everyone home with a stomachache, but it’s just the right amount of cake, frosting and chocolate.
How is your week going? It’s not long until the weekend now! I’ve been inspired just this week to take my passion for dessert recipe creation and be more adventurous with my midweek meals. Does anyone else feel all the things when you have to jump into the kitchen after a big day?
One thing that helps me is trying NEW things. As much as I love tried and true recipes, nothing gets me into the kitchen faster than trying out a new recipe. So let’s break old habits and get creative in the kitchen this week, shall we?
I’m honoured to be sharing this Death By Cake recipe over on Handle the Heat today. Tessa creates all kinds of sweet treats (I think we might have the same tastebuds!) so pop on over and see what else you find!
And if you are ready to jump onboard the one layer cake train, try this cake and then you can move on to my Mint Chocolate Cake or my Peanut Butter Poke Cake with Chocolate Crumbs. Both are equally delicious!

Death by chocolate indeed! I love that you’re bringing back the one layer cake– sometimes double layers can be so intimidating! And this certainly looks like it has more than enough room for all of the chocolate. No second layer needed!

This is definitely a cake for my husband, he would go crazy just by seeing those chocolate pieces on top of the cake. ๐ And it is always an incentive to bake when the recipe is easy and fast.

Thanks Adina! Sometimes these easy bakes are the best aren’t they?
