Oh hey there pretty San Francisco!
Not only do you have a beautiful bay, a golden bridge and the prettiest houses but you also know how to come to the food party. And you all know how much I love a good food party.
Having JUST returned from the USA, I have so many amazing food recommendations to share, starting with San Francisco. From gorgeous pastries to tater tot nachos and salt water taffy – these are my fave San Francisco eats!
Blue Bottle Coffee
66 Mint Street, San Francisco
Tip: The breakfast at Blue Bottle is worth the wait. My favourite is the poached eggs on toast, the eggs are always cooked perfectly and their milk bread is heaven. I’ve also heard good things about their granola.
Mr Holmes Bakehouse
1042 Larkin Street, San Francisco
Tip: We ate an embarrassing amount of food from Mr Holmes and it was all good. But if I was to recommend one thing, it would be one of their cruffins. The flavours change constantly and you can’t find this unique creation anywhere else.
600 Guerro Street, San Francisco
Tip: It’s worth jumping on the train from Union Square and going two stop to the Mission District. While you’re here, visit Dolores Park and go get lunch or a sweet treat from Tartine Bakery. The long lines speak for themselves.
3692 18th Street, San Francisco
Tip: While you’re in the Mission District, save some room for an ice cream from Bi-Rite. Their flavours change all the time but their most popular is the caramel. Delicious!
809 Bush Street, San Francisco
Tip: This place is a little bit of a hidden gem. A hole in the wall with hardly any seating but lines streaming out the door with people hungry for a taste of Mexico-Korean fusion. I loved the tacos and the tater tot nachos – need I say more?
1 Ferry Building, San Francisco
Tips: Specialising in modern Vietnamese food, Slanted Door is still one of my all-time favourite restaurants. I loved the caramel chicken claypot, and the desserts here are something special as well.
Tip: It’s worth going to Boudin just to try authentic San Francisco sourdough bread. You can watch them making their sourdough creations by hand at the Fisherman’s Wharf location, but these bakeries have popped up all over the city. Also a great place to enjoy a chowder bread bowl.
650 Market Street
Tip: For a cheap and cheerful lunch, try one of the Vietnamese eats from Bun Mee. Obviously they do a mean banh mi, but you can also get a banh mi bowl, salads and crispy sweet potato fries.
The Cheesecake Factory
251 Geary Street, San Francisco
Tip: I know there are Cheesecake Factories all over the country, but for us, the one in San Fran is a must. The Geary Street Cheesecake Factory is situated right in the heart of Union Square at the top of the 8 storey Macy’s. Enjoy the free bread, free refills, a giant salad and a slice of cheesecake. My fave is their Banana Cream Cheesecake.
2 Beach Street, San Francisco
Tip: Head down to Fisherman’s Wharf to enjoy a spot of shopping and watch the sea lions basking in the sun. While you’re there, visit the Candy Baron to satisify your sweet tooth. They have a mountain of sweet water taffy that comes in all kinds of flavours – try them ALL!
